In the form of no more clutch. It happened on the other side of town so I ended up floating gears and trying to time lights the whole way home. I guess this is a sort of jalop right of passage, but damn does that suck. Especially when I finally got it all washed, waxed, and prepped to start spending its time under a nice car cover last weekend, and replaced its battery with one that can hold a charge for longer than 2 days today. I guess the Mazda gods decided too much was right in the world.

In the realm of RX-8 maladies, this is like having the sniffles. Your engine could be hemmoraging oil through its seals like a rotary shaped faucet.

The rennie isn't exactly known for that... more of a 12A kinda problem. But you're right, things could be much worse. Since it's not my daily though it'll probably sit out there under its nice new car cover until I get REALLY bored and decide to troubleshoot it.

i didn't realize there were different engines throughout the different model years. All I know is that over the three short months I worked at Mazda, we had three RX-8s flatbedded in that were beyond repair due to engine troubles. They all went to auction.

The 12A was in the first generation RX7, as well as RX2, RX3, and RX4. They have an oil galley seal issue that leads to them hemorrhaging oil out of the side of the block. Most failures in the 13B-MSP(the one in the RX8) are due to either side seal spring failure, or some sort of warping of the apex seal, which leads to lack of compression, but no oil in places it shouldn't be.
I'm going to go out on a limb and say that most of those cars were 04-06's and have a good chance of being owned by people who didn't treat them right, or were automatics.

It's a common issue with RX-8s, with mods like intake and exhaust and rotary accents you're making too much torque for the clutch and driveshaft.
Was it the clutch, or the weak ass pedal that broke?

Hope it's an easy fix, like the master or slave cylinder needs replacing or maybe the flexible hose blew?
Many years ago I had a 1973 Toyota commuter bus(13 seat mini bus) that had the slave cylinder fail. It was late at night and I was about 50km or an hours drive from home. I did the traffic light timing thing and rev matching and managed to make it home on no clutch. Exciting time it was.

My pedal has been pulled out and seam welded a long time ago, so that will never break again. Haha
I'm pretty sure it's gonna be a line or cylinder once I take the time to look at it.

Good call. Sounds like the perfect time to upgrade to the new BHR header and midpipe.
